On Monday 1 October, venerable Dutch club Zwolsche Athletische Club (ZAC) celebrate a great milestone: the 125th anniversary of their founding.
To mark the start of this year of celebration, FIFA President Gianni Infantino sent a letter of congratulations to the club.
“Monday will surely be a special day for ZAC‚ one of the oldest clubs in continental Europe. On behalf of the international football community, it is my great pleasure to congratulate you on this historic milestone,” he wrote.
“This anniversary has only been achieved thanks to the support and passion of aIl those who believe in the beauty and benefits of our sport – namely yourself, the current and former members of your committee, the many players and coaches who have contributed to the success of your cIub down the years, your loyal supporters, and finally, all your predecessors.”
Infantino made special mention of the club’s first chairman and honorary president, Jasper Warner, who was also President of the Dutch Federation and played a part in the foundation of FIFA itself.
The club plans to mark the day by visiting the final resting place of Warner and laying a wreath. This will be followed by a special dinner and reception, where all present will make special note of Warner’s motto: "Sport is of indispensable value to the society."
