Deschamps cut his coaching teeth with Monaco, leading them to the Champions League final in 2004 and subsequently managed two of his former clubs, taking Juventus back up to Serie A and Marseille to the title after an 18-year wait. He was appointed coach of the French national side after EURO 2012, replacing Laurent Blanc.
